It appears a Hall of Famer and former Detroit defenseman is joining the Red Wings next season.

Clarifying a previous report by TSN analyst and former Red Wings defenseman Aaron Ward, the Detroit Free Press is reporting that Chris Chelios will be working with the Red Wings’ defensemen during the 2015-16 campaign. It’s akin to a role he had in Grand Rapids, working with the Griffins’ blue liners. He will not be on the bench with head coach Jeff Blashill.

The news comes hours after it was announced Chelios will serve as an assistant coach on the U.S. World Junior Team in late 2015.

Chelios skated in 1,651 NHL games, amassing 948 points, three Norris Trophies and three Stanley Cups – one with Montreal in 1986, two with Detroit in 2002 and 2008.
