While the Hockeytown faithful sit around waiting for the Red Wings to make a big splash in the free-agent market, the team has taken care of some housekeeping issues.
Detroit announced today that they have signed forward Riley Sheahan and goaltender Petr Mrazek to new contracts, keeping both of their prospects in the system for the next two seasons.
Sheahan, 22, signed a new two-year contract today. He played in 42 games with the Red Wings this past season (his second at the pro level) and recorded 24 points – good for 24th among all NHL rookies in total scoring. Sheahan, a Notre Dame alum, was the team’s first-round pick (21st overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft.
Meanwhile, Mrazek signed a one-year contract extension that extends him to the 2015-16 season. The 22-year-old netminder, the Wings’ fifth-round pick in 2010, was second in the AHL with a 2.10 goals-against average and third in the league with a .924 save percentage during this past season. He was named to the AHL’s Second Team at the conclusion of the season.
