While he is no longer a part of the Detroit Red Wings, Tom McCollum will still be staying close to Hockeytown.

The Red Wings reportedly cut ties with their 2008 first-round pick during the first week of July, but the Griffins announced yesterday that they have signed McCollum to a one-year AHL contract.

The 23-year-old goaltender set career-high marks in wins (18), goals-against average (2.63), save percentage (0.904) and shutouts (2) last season while posting a 18-11-2 record in 31 games played.

McCollum ranks third in Griffins franchise history in games played (113) and saves (2,728), and is tied for fifth with 45 wins.

From 2009-12, McCollum also appeared in 42 games with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, recording a 19-16-4 record, a 2.84 goals-against average, and three shutouts.

He struggled in his lone appearance in a NHL contest, allowing three goals on eight shots in a game against St. Louis in 2011.
