Quick hits

If you’re following us on Twitter, then you know that I was in charge of picking the three stars for the Red Wings game last night. It’s the highlight of my day, and it’s also a very stressful experience, believe it or not. Yet I feel the need to clarify why the three stars I picked – you can see them here – have nothing to do with what I focused my game recap on. I submitted my selections with about five minutes remaining in the third period (standard practice for the selection process). Then, after handing over that important piece of paper, I watched Jimmy Howard make a save. Then another save. Then another save.

Long story short, I would have had the Wings’ goaltender included on those after he stood on his head to preserve the win for Detroit.

Outside the Mitten

It didn’t take long for Bruce Boudreau to find a new home. Two days after he was fired by the Capitals, Boudreau has already been named head coach of the Anaheim Ducks. He’s replacing Randy Carlyle, who was the fourth NHL coach to be fired this season.

About five hours before their game with the Wings, Steve Yzerman locked up Victor Hedman to a five-year  extension. I wonder if Stevie Y was hoping that would encourage his young defenseman to have a big game at the Joe…
