Having just signed forward Andreas Athanasiou to a one-year contract, the Red Wings needed to make a move.
Today, the Wings traded defenseman Ryan Sproul to the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Matt Puempel.
Sproul, 24, is a former Wings’ second-round pick (2011) and recorded seven points in 28 career games with Detroit, as he struggled to crack the lineup consistently.
Puempel, also 24, was in a similar situation having been drafted by Ottawa in the first round in 2011 before being dealt to the Rangers last season.
Puempel has skated in 79 career NHL games and has posted 15 points. This season, with Hartford (AHL), he has three points in five games.
