Quick hits
Sounds like the Red Wings won’t be landing Rick Nash – TSN is reporting that the former Columbus captain will be traded to the Rangers.
Check out what some of Michigan’s most powerful people in youth hockey had to say about the Mite 8U rule changes from the recent annual MAHA summer meetings.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks have debuted a new logo. See it right here. Our thoughts? Thumbs up…just make sure you don’t get either of them sliced off.
The Saginaw Spirit have unveiled a new third jersey; we’ve got photos right here. Looks similar to the Rangers’ uniform with ‘Saginaw’ spelled out diagonally across the front. Should look great on the ice.
Happy birthday to the NHL’s second commissioner Mervyn “Red” Dutton, born on this day in 1898. After the death of Frank Calder, the NHL’s first president, Dutton was named acting president in 1945, but handed control over to Clarence Campbell in 1946.
Highlight reel
I present you with what is perhaps one of the most ridiculous, but effective technological innovations the NHL has seen (at least for the casual fan): FoxTrax, which made its debut here at the 1996 NHL All-Star Game. Looking back now, there were quite a bit of Red Wings – either with Detroit at the time or eventually played for them – in the game.
Outside the Mitten
The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they’ve signed their first-overall pick from the 2012 NHL Entry Draft; Nail Yakupov has agreed to a three-year entry level deal.
The Florida Panthers have re-signed forward Kris Versteeg to a four-year extension. Versteeg lit the lamp 23 times and added 31 assists for a career-high 54 points in 71 games with the Panthers last season.
And Dustin Byfuglien gives us our latest reminder to operate boats safely.
