Wings drop fifth straight

The Red Wings will look for their first win in six games Thursday night when they host the Calgary Flames.

DETROIT – The Red Wings played 59 minutes of shutout hockey Tuesday night. But two goals allowed in a 2:33 span erased any good will, and added to their losing streak.

Minnesota captain Mikko Koivu scored his first goal of the season at the 19:00 mark of the third period – a redirection off a point shot from Justin Falk – to erase a longstanding lead for the Wings. Less than two minutes later, Devin Setoguchi scored off a rebound from Koivu’s initial shot to win the game for the visitors.

The positive side is that we got a point,” goaltender Jimmy Howard said. “But it just shows how vital 60 minutes is, and you have to play.”

The Wings have now dropped five straight, and only scored five goals during that span. A goal by captain Nicklas Lidstrom on the Wings’ first power play of the night, just six minutes into the contest, seemed to signal a change in their offensive struggles. But it turned out to be the Wings’ lone marker for the night.

“It is a concern when you’re not scoring goals,” Lidstrom said. “We did have some chances tonight, but we only got one on the power play, so we have to get some more offense from all the guys.”

While the Wings played well on the power play – holding them scoreless on six chances in regulation – Lidstrom said it is something that has to be addressed, as well.

“It hurt us, being in the box, especially during the second period,” Lidstrom said. “They got some momentum going by being on the power play. We were spending too much time in the box. At the end, whether they’re calls or not, we’re still in the box, and that’s what’s hurting us.”
