Two members of the Lake Superior State hockey program have started the 2018-19 season with a little hardware.
Goaltender Mareks Mitens was named the WCHA goaltender of the week on Monday. His teammate, Pierre-Luc Veillette, was named rookie of the week by the conference, as well.
Mitens, a sophomore netminder and native of Ventspils, Latvia, recorded an impressive 31-save shutout to give his LSSU club a 1-0, sweep-clinching win at Merrimack on Sunday. Mitens stopped 25 shots after LSSU took the lead 37 seconds into the second period.
Meanwhile, Veillette, a native of Drummondville, Quebec, tied for the WCHA rookie lead with two assists and two points, after he picked up a pair in LSSU’s season-opening 5-4 win the previous day.
