The Saginaw Spirit will be looking for a new head coach this summer.
The OHL franchise announced Tuesday morning that Spencer Carbery, fresh off his first season with the Spirit, has accepted an assistant coach position with an AHL franchise.
A team spokesperson could not confirm which team Carbery, 35, will be joining.
Carbery previously spent five seasons as the head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL before joining the Spirit for the 2016-17 season.
“I want to congratulate Spencer Carbery on his career advancement,” said Drinkill. “We feel we have made large strides in creating the culture we want here in Saginaw, and look to continue that in the near future.”
UPDATE: Carbery will be joining the AHL’s Providence Bruins. The Spirit will also be looking for another assistant coach as Canton native and Michigan Tech alum John Kisil has left the team for a scouting position in the NHL.
Good luck to Spencer Carbery and John Kisil as they advance their careers. Tough to see friends and good people go but happy for them.
