Following a battle with lung cancer, Dave Rue has passed away at the age of 54.
Rue is a former Western Michigan player – from 1980-83 – and a well-respected hockey official in the West Michigan area. He was most recently known for mentoring young hockey players and aspiring referees.
Per Fox 17 West Michigan, Rue passed at home surrounded by family.
Self-employed when away from the rink, Rue was forced to give up his construction business to undergo chemotherapy.
There had been a number of charity games held in recent months to support Rue in his fight.
A celebration of his life will take place at Patterson Ice Arena on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
