The WCHA announced their weekly awards today, and all three honorees play for Michigan schools.
Ferris State’s Cory Kane, Lake Superior State’s Kevin Kapalka and Michigan Tech’s Reid Sturos were all honored by their conference today after exception weekends.
Kane, a senior for the Bulldogs, was named offensive player of the week after recording four points in two games during FSU’s sweep of Alaska Anchorage. Kane, a Irvine, Calif. native, scored a goal and three assists, and had a team-high eight shots on goal.
Kapalka, a senior goaltender for LSSU, returned from an injury to lead his team to a road sweep at Alabama Huntsville last weekend. That earned him the WCHA defensive player of the week selection. Kapalka, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, helped the Lakers to 2-1 and 3-2 wins by stopping 40 of 43 shots on goal for a .930 save percentage.
Sturos, a freshman forward for the Huskies, was named the league’s rookie of the week after recording five points in a series sweep of Northern Michigan. The Brighton native recorded a hat trick on Friday (along with an assist), then scored the first goal of the game on Saturday.
