University of Michigan coach Red Berenson received another honor from his playing days yesterday.

The Wolverines’ bench boss was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame last night, in a ceremony held at the Millennium Hotel in St. Louis, Mo.

Berenson played in two different stints for the St. Louis Blues during his NHL career, first from 1968-1971 and then at the end of his career from 1974-1978.

“During my time in St. Louis as a coach and a player, we lived in the city and got to know other athletes in different sports,” Berenson said in a release. “To come back and be remembered as an inductee into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame is nice for me, because I’ve been away from St. Louis for over 30 years now.”

Berenson joins St. Louis baseball legends Joe Torre and Keith Hernandez, along with Blues great and former Red Wing Brett Hull, as members of the now 16-person hall of fame.

On Nov. 7, 1968, Berenson made history with the Blues when he scored six goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, four of which coming in a nine-minute time span. It was the first time since 1944 that a player had scored six goals in an NHL game, and it has been accomplished only once ever since. Berenson also set NHL records for most goals in a road game and most goals in a period, both of which still stand today.

Berenson also coached the Blues, being promoted to their head coach position in the middle of the 1979-80 season. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 1980-81, when he led the Blues to a 45-18-17 record.

The Regina, Saskatachewan native, who played for the Wolverines before his professional career, is also a member of the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor, the Dekers Club Hall of Fame, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
