After recording his first career hat trick in the conference finals, it’s no surprise that Tom Wilson is the Ontario Hockey League’s Player of the Week.
The OHL announced today that the Plymouth Whalers’ forward is their POW selection for the playoff week ending April 21, after Wilson recorded three goals and a plus-minus rating of +3 in the time period.
Wilson’s big night helped the Whalers to a series-evening Game 2 win against the London Knights – a game that went to double overtime.
Here’s the release from the OHL:
Wilson scored his first career hat-trick on Sunday afternoon as first star in Game 2 of the Rogers Western Conference Championship Series helping the Whalers to a 4-3 double overtime victory over the London Knights to even the series 1-1. The Whalers fell behind three different times in Game 2 with all three of Wilson’s goals tying the score including his third marker netted with just 48 seconds to play in regulation. That goal paved the way for Rickard Rakell’s game-winner at 10:16 of the second overtime period to end the longest game in Whalers history. The Knights earned a 2-1 victory in Game 1 of the series on Friday night, with Game 3 set for Tuesday night in Plymouth.
Wilson, a 19-year-old from Toronto, ON, is playing in his third OHL season with the Whalers. A first round pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2012 NHL Draft, Wilson scored 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points in 48 regular season games this season and has six goals and six assists for 12 points in nine playoff games.
A trio of Barrie Colts were also considered for the award this week including forward Mark Scheifele who scored two goals and three assists for five points, and defenceman Aaron Ekblad who scored a goal and three assists for four points in two games of the Rogers Eastern Conference Championship Series against the Belleville Bulls. In goal, Mathias Niederberger backstopped the Colts to a 1-1 record against the Bulls including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.51 and save percentage of .959.
