Quick hits

Fifteen years ago today, the Detroit Red Wings captured Lord Stanley’s Cup for the first time in 42 years. In the process, the Red Wings forever changed hockey in our state.

The Devils live to see another day after their 3-1 victory over the Kings last night in Game 4.  Adam Henrique scored with 4:31 left to break a 1-1 tie, while Ilya Kovalchuk added an empty-netter to seal the win for New Jersey.

Our Michi-gamer of the night is not Alec Martinez for the third straight time, but Andy Greene of the New Jersey Devils.  The defenseman had an assist and was a plus-2 in last night’s game.

Highlight reel

Even with the Devils trailing 3-1 in the series, it doesn’t take away from what Martin Brodeur has been able to accomplish at the age of 40.  Here is a video showing some of his career highlights.

Outside the Mitten

With the shakeup of the college hockey conferences, Alabama-Huntsville will be the only independent team and is still looking for a home.  Members of the WCHA will meet next week and the possibility of adding Alabama-Huntsville to the conference will be a hot topic.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have not made it to the postseason in eight seasons and are the only team to not make it since the 2003-04 lockout.  But at least the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ AHL Affiliate, is in the Calder Cup Finals.  Game three is tonight at 7 p.m. in Toronto with the Marlies trailing in the series 2-0 to the Norfolk Admirals.

The Montreal Canadiens fired coaches Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur on Wednesday, a day after hiring Michel Therrien as head coach.

With the Red Wings out of the playoffs, we know you are missing some of the magic Pavel Datsyuk can pull off with his stick.  Here are some of his top shootout goals.

Next up

The Kings will head back to New Jersey to try and close out the series against the Devils Saturday night. It is only fitting for the Kings to get a chance to win the Cup on the road where they are a perfect 10-0 so far this postseason.
