Bearded Ice – May 9

Bearded Ice, Shaved Ice meets the NHL playoff tradition of not shaving.

Sorry for the delay. I was out celebrating No. 19’s birthday.

Quick hits

As mentioned above, it’s Steve Yzerman’s birthday today. The Wings legend turns 47, so we decided to dig up Darren Eliot’s article on why he’s the best player to ever wear the Winged Wheel. Check it out right here.

The other big news of the day, which wouldn’t have been mentioned in Bearded Ice had I gotten it done earlier, is that the Wolverines unveiled some new jerseys. We’ve got you covered if you haven’t seen them yet (hopefully you read about it here first, though).

Today’s Michi-gamer isn’t a household name, but he deserves to be recognized nonetheless. Check it out right here.

Highlight reel

Rochester’s own Jacob Trouba was on NHL Live yesterday, talking about the upcoming NHL Draft. They aren’t the only ones chatting with him; we’ll have some of our own coverage on the potential top-10 pick later this week.

Outside the Mitten

The only NHL series that remains undecided is the New York vs. Washington match-up. That could change tonight, when the Rangers look to finish off the Capitals.

Last night, the Devils earned their spot in the conference finals with a 3-1 win over the Flyers, taking their best-of-seven series in five games.

The Blues will now have a new owner. Read more about that one right here.

Since we’re talking Yzerman today, why not talk about No. 5 and No. 9 too? Here’s my take on why Lidstrom’s the best Red Wing, and Kevin Allen’s take on why Mr. Hockey is.

We’ll see.
