List of Warrior Hockey Day in Michigan events continue to grow

FARMINGTON HILLS – With the Feb. 18 Warrior Hockey Day in Michigan just two weeks away, the list of events celebrating the game keeps getting longer.

In addition to two CCHA games on TV, numerous free “Try Hockey” clinics and the quest for “Local Hockey Heroes,” the seventh annual statewide celebration now also includes a Detroit Red Wings outdoor practice at Detroit’s Clark Park and 24 hours of hockey at Joe Louis Arena.

As part of the Red Wings’ Hockeytown Thanks initiative the one-hour practice at Clark Park will start at noon (gates open at 11 a.m.) on February 18 and the first 2,000 fans to arrive will be able to watch the team prepare for their Sunday home game versus San Jose.

Fans wishing to attend the Red Wings’ outdoor practice will be required to make one of three charitable donations upon entering Clark Park:

  • Canned goods to benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan OR
  • At least $2 cash/person in support of the Clark Park Coalition OR
  • Pre-owned hockey equipment to be used by Clark Park and the Detroit Hockey Association

Hot chocolate and coffee will be available courtesy of event co-sponsor Tim Hortons and fifty pairs of V.I.P. lanyards granting holders exclusive access to the Tim Hortons Hot Zone at Clark Park will be given away leading up to the practice. At the conclusion of the Red Wings practice, an open public skate will be held at Clark Park courtesy of event co-sponsor Kroger. In order to participate, skaters must fill out a waiver on site and have their own equipment with them. Free parking for this event will be available at Western International High School (1500 Scotten Street) and Earhart Elementary-Middle School (1000 Scotten Street). Indian Trails Transportation will run complimentary shuttles to and from Clark Park.

Also on Warrior Hockey Day in Michigan, the Red Wings will present a 24-hour hockey marathon at Joe Louis Arena beginning at one minute past midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning. The FOX Sports Detroit Girls, who will also be attending the Red Wings’ Clark Park practice, will drop the puck at midnight to officially kick off the proceedings.

The 24-hours of hockey starts with adult squad games from 12:01 a.m. – 7:00 a.m., a USA Hockey American Development Clinic and two, one-hour free “Try Hockey” clinics on Saturday morning.

Following the back-to-back clinics, youth teams will compete on the JLA ice in the afternoon, the Michigan Catholic High School State Championship game starts at 7:30 p.m. and the 24-hours of hockey at The Joe wraps up with a two-hour adult hockey session. For more information on participating in the youth or adult games at JLA, call Adam Dubois at (313) 396-7451.

In the event of inclement weather, the Red Wings practice will be held within the same time parameters at Joe Louis Arena.  Parking will be available at a cost of $5 per vehicle at both the main JLA garage and the venue’s adjacent Riverfront lot.  The public skate portion of the event will be cancelled if the open practice is held at The Joe.

Also on Warrior Hockey Day in Michigan on February 18, FOX Sports Detroit will be providing full coverage of two CCHA matchups – Northern Michigan at Michigan at 5:05 p.m. and Alaska at Michigan State at 8:05 p.m. – as well as live pre-game and post-game coverage.

In addition, Perani’s Hockey World – the Official Shopping Destination of Hockey Day in Michigan – is offering 20% off all Warrior hockey products the entire weekend (February 17-19) at all locations throughout Michigan. Visit warrior.com for more information.

And there is still time to nominate someone that goes above and beyond to help develop and promote hockey in your community.  The CCHA is on a quest to recognize these “Local Hockey Heroes” who far exceed expectations with their contributions to the game.
