Shaved Ice – Oct. 14

By Michael Caples –

Welcome to Shaved Ice, the new daily blog for MiHockeyNow.com. Every morning, we will share a comprehensive summary of what’s happening in hockey around the Mitten – in the hopes of starting your day off right. Because let’s face it, what’s better than a little hockey in the morning?

Quick hits

  • The Red Wings shut out the defending Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks last night, beating them 2-0. Justin Abdelkader and Valtteri Filppula had second-period tallies for the Wings. Here was my game recap from last night. And on a personal bragging note, I picked the “Three Stars” of the night for the first time – check out the official score sheet.
  • Out in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines continued their winning streak. Grand Rapids native Luke Glendening recorded a hat trick, leading Michigan to a dominating 10-3 win over St. Lawrence.  The Maize and Blue are now a perfect 4-0 in regular-season games this year, as they prepare for the start of the CCHA season.
  • The Whalers lost to rival Windsor 4-3 in overtime last night. Plymouth is now 3-4-1 on the season.

Highlight reel

Outside the Mitten

It hasn’t been the start Winnipeg hockey fans were hoping for, as the Jets are still looking for their first win (0-2). However, it’s a good time for Lapeer native Jim Slater. The former Spartan missed 47 games last year due to concussion problems, but he’s back in a NHL line-up and contributing. Slater had two goals last night in the Jets’ 4-3 loss to Chicago last night.

Other NHL scores from last night:

  • New Jersey beat L.A. 2-1 in a shootout.
  • The Islanders beat Tampa 5-1.
  • Washington beat Pittsburgh 3-2 in overtime.
  • Calgary beat Montreal 4-1.
  • Colorado beat Ottawa 7-1.
  • Phoenix beat Nashville 5-2.
  • Minnesota beat Edmonton 2-1 in a shootout.
  • Dallas beat St. Louis 3-2.
