Today, the WCHA bestowed quite an honor on Ferris State forward Chad McDonald.
The Battle Creek native was named the conference’s student-athlete of the year, as voted upon by faculty representatives from all 10 member institutions.
McDonald was a four-year contributor to a FSU club that made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and captured the MacNaughton Cup in 2015-16. He recorded 84 points in a total of 145 collegiate games, reaching the 20-point mark in three of his four campaigns.
He will graduate in May with a B.S. in Business Administration, an A.S. in Legal Studies and a Certificate in data mining. McDonald led the Bulldogs off the ice as much as on, tutoring other players and playing a significant role in the team’s Top 10 finish in the NCAA Academic Progress Report in each of his four years.
He is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award for his work outside the classroom; McDonald has volunteered for a variety of different organizations. He plays floor hockey with Big Rapids Special Olympians and helps at Battle Creek’s Community Inclusive Recreation as a mentor. In addition, he talks to fifth-graders from low-income households about the importance of education.
