Zach Werenski left the University of Michigan early to start his professional hockey career, but he’s still writing papers for class.
Well, not class – more like his employer’s official website.
Werenski, a USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program and Wolverines alum, penned a piece about the week leading up to his NHL debut with the team that drafted him No. 8 overall two years ago.
With an opening line like, “On Tuesday, I shook my bosses’ hands as they said ‘welcome to the NHL,’” he certainly set the tone for a well-written story about cracking the Blue Jackets’ line-up.
Check it out here, and check out a few of the highlights below:
“I’ve been on a mission to make this team since I turned pro in March. Ever since I left Michigan, I’ve done everything in preparation for this opportunity in training camp. When I joined the Monsters, I wanted to be the best player I could be and help win a championship – and that experience was one of the best of my life.”

“This is only the start of my journey, but I’d be crazy to not thank some of the people who have helped me get here. My parents and my family have supported me throughout. From a young kid growing up in Grosse Pointe to a 19-year-old on the verge of making his NHL debut, they’ve been my biggest fans every step of the way.”

“I may be in the NHL, but I’m not satisfied.”
