Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill announced today that Justin Abdelkader will be wearing the ‘A’ on a permanent basis this season.
The Wings’ bench boss said – as announced on the DRW Twitter account – that Abdelkader is the team’s new assistant captain.
Abdelkader, 29, is starting his eighth season with the Red Wings. A native of Muskegon and a Michigan State alum, Abdelkader signed a seven-year extension last fall.
He joins Henrik Zetterberg (captain) and Niklas Kronwall (assistant captain) as the players wearing letters for the Red Wings.
