It was the 67th edition of the Winter Carnival weekend hockey series for Michigan Tech this past Friday and Saturday, and the Huskies didn’t disappoint.

Michigan Tech posted a weekend sweep against Lake Superior State to capture their 45th Winter Carnival series championship.

With a 3-0 victory on Friday and a 3-1 victory on Saturday, the Huskies improved to 75-45-14 all-time in games played during the Winter Carnival.

“I’m really proud of our players,” said head coach Mel Pearson via the Huskies’ official website. “We got the points we needed. Max Vallis had a terrific weekend and deserved the MVP. It seems like every week we have someone else stepping up for us and it’s very important for us to win a trophy like the MacInnes Cup.”

On Friday, Vallis scored twice in the second period, while Matt Roy added the final goal of the 3-0 victory in the third. Jamie Phillips was perfect between the pipes, stopping all 31 shots he faced.

The next night, Vallis scored again, while CJ Eick and Jake Lucchini also found the back of the net for the Huskies. Gage Torrel was the lone Laker to beat Phillips on the weekend, scoring on a penalty shot in the final minute of regulation. Other than that, Phillips stopped all other 21 shots he faced.
