Sportsnet analyst Corey Hirsch is a former NHL netminder, so it may be a bit surprising to see the stance he’s taking on the state of goaltender equipment.
Hirsch recently took a stab at fixing one of the hot-button issues in the hockey world today: increasing scoring in the NHL. Though he did tend goal at the NHL and AHL levels from 1992-2003, Hirsch suggested downsizing goaltender equipment all around, rather than simply increasing net size in order to, as he said, maintain the integrity of the game.
Most importantly, Hirsch said he believes the reduction in equipment size would not compromise player safety due to the technological advances made over the years in producing thinner, yet more durable materials.
