The WCHA announced their players of the week today, and a trio of Michigan imports filled the list.
Michigan Tech’s Alex Petan was named offensive player of the week, while teammate Jamie Phillips grabbed the top defenseman award. Meanwhile, Ferris State’s Darren Smith earned rookie of the week honors.
Petan, a native of Delta, B.C., led the WCHA and tied for second in the nation with three goals last weekend, leading the Huskies to a three-point weekend against Minnesota State. Petan scored twice in Tech’s 3-1 win on Saturday, and he also had a goal in a 2-2 tie the night before.
Phillips, a native of Caledonia, Ont., stopped 55 of the 58 shots he faced in the series with Minnesota State. That was good for a .948 save percentage and 1.44 goals-against average on the weekend.
Smith started both games for the Bulldogs between the pipes, and helped Ferris State pick up three points against Alabama-Huntsville. The rookie netminder posted a .905 save percentage and 1.92 goals-against average in a 3-3 tie Friday and 4-1 win Saturday.
