The Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL announced Thursday the signing of a former Western Michigan Broncos standout, right on the heels of signing another senior forward.
The K-Wings added Bloomfield Hills native Will Kessel, the Broncos’ captain in 2014-15, just two days after adding Grosse Pointe Woods native Justin Kovacs to the lineup.
Kessel wrapped up a four-year career with WMU that saw him tally 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 148 games. He helped guide the Broncos to a CCHA Championship and earn a NCAA tournament berth in the 2011-12 campaign.
Prior to his collegiate career, Kessel made back-to-back trips to the Clark Cup Finals in the USHL with the Green Bay Gamblers, winning the trophy in 2010.
Kovacs also skated in a Broncos sweater for four years and amassed 23 goals and 76 points in 129 career games. The Grosse Pointe North alum most recently finished third on Western Michigan in scoring with 26 points in 35 games.
In his ECHL debut Tuesday, Kovacs made an immediate impact, potting an assist in a 5-3 victory over the Indy Fuel.
