Next Saturday, the puck will drop on a 1:30 p.m. game at Van Andel Arena that won’t feature the Grand Rapids Griffins, but one that will certainly still draw in hockey fans.
The Griffins will be hosting the Ryan Fischer Legacy Scholarship Hockey Classic game that afternoon, a match between the Grandville and Detroit Catholic Central at Van Andel.
Last year, those two schools played in a Division I state semifinal game on the same day that Grandville captain Ryan Fischer passed away.
At the conclusion of that contest, the Shamrocks players skated to the Grandville net to join in a unified huddle to show their support for their opponents dealing with a terrible tragedy, and ever since, the two programs have been supporting one another.
Tickets for the game are on sale for $15 – click here to purchase and use “FISCHER” as a promo code. Tickets will work for both the high school game and the Griffins’ game later that night against the Rochester Americans. Proceeds from the tickets will be donated to the Ryan Fisher Legacy Scholarship fund.
The game will also be broadcasted live on WOOD 106.9 FM by Griffins broadcaster Bob Kaser and WOOD TV8 anchor Larry Figurski, who is a Detroit Catholic Central graduate and current Grandville resident.
