The 15th edition of the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Prep Hockey Showcase begins in less than two weeks.
The showcase, which features 42 of the top ranked high school hockey teams from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio, will be held in Trenton from Feb. 12-14.
“The main goal of the MIHL is to promote high quality high school hockey, strong competition and sportsmanship,” MIHL president Andy Weidenbach said in a press release. “The showcase was a natural offshoot of that mission. The first fourteen Showcases were great successes and we are very optimistic about this year’s event. High school hockey in Michigan has experienced tremendous growth, accordingly, the Showcase has expanded from 12 teams to 42 teams so that we can continue our mission of providing exposure for the best of high school hockey.”
Three teams – Hancock, St. Francis (Toledo) and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central – will be making their first appearance at the showcase, while Grandville, Grosse Ile, Riverview and Grand Rapids Forest Hills North will be returning after a lengthy absence.
More than 88 scouts were in attendance at last year’s showcase, including every USHL and NAHL team and a host of college programs.
“Scouting the state of Michigan definitely includes high school players,” Miami head coach Enrico Blasi said in the release. “The number of quality teams is increasing and the overall skill level of the players has improved. The MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase allows us to see the best teams and players in the state compete in a highly competitive environment. The MIHL and the City of Trenton do a tremendous job putting it together – from a scouting perspective, it is very well organized allowing scouts to do their jobs efficiently. It is a great venue and a must attend event annually.”
