Video: Michigan native has stick broken over her head in international girls tournament

UPDATE (August 4, 1:30 p.m.): Congrats to the West Coast Selects Team, who captured gold in their international tournament.

By @MichaelCaples –

Video out of Budapest, Hungary from Michigan natives shows a terrible scene during a girls’ hockey game, and yet another reminder that dangerous outbursts on the ice shouldn’t be tolerated.

The video below shows Little Caesars 16U player Hannah Bates, currently playing for the West Coast Selects Team at the U16 World Selects Invitational girls tournament, being struck over the head by a Russian opponent’s stick.

Bates avoided serious injury from the altercation.

The MiHockey team is glad to hear that Bates is OK, and we hope that the girls team – still overseas – gets through the rest of the tournament safely. Thanks to teammate Megan Roe (@meganroe0) for keeping us informed of the story.

Coaches, parents, players – when the season begins this fall, please keep incidents like this in mind, and remember that it’s just a game – no one should be subjected to something like that.
