The Detroit Red Wings announced today that their captain would be making an early trip home from Sochi.

Henrik Zetterberg, who has long battled back problems, went from being a question mark for Team Sweden to being officially removed from action today. The Team Sweden captain will be returning to Michigan to begin treatment on his back instead of competing with his countrymen for gold.

“In this situation it was no tough decision as this was no borderline case,” Sweden team doctor Bjorn Waldeback told NHL.com. “For people who know medicine it is obvious that this couldn’t continue.

“[Henrik] has been in touch with the Detroit medical staff. I have been in touch with the NHL doctors who are here. They totally agree with us. When you suffer from a herniated disk the way he does, you need to go home for a medical evaluation.”

Zetterberg scored in his lone 2014 Olympic contest, helping Sweden to a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic.

NHL.com’s Dan Rosen tweeted that Waldeback said if Zetterberg’s back stays the way it is now “…he will be out for the rest of the season.”

Red Wings assistant captain Niklas Kronwall will take over the captain duties for Team Sweden for the rest of the 2014 Games.
