Broncos sweep Miami

MiHockey was at both of Western Michigan’s games this weekend to see the Broncos sweep No. 13 Miami. Click here for recaps from Friday and Saturday.

Bulldogs sweep Huskies

A third-period goal from Traverse City native Garrett Thompson propelled Ferris State (No. 2; 17-3-3) to a 1-0 win over in-state WCHA rival Michigan Tech (7-13-6) Friday night in Big Rapids. Assists on Thompson’s goal went to Macomb’s Scott Czarnowczan and Sterling Heights’ Travis White. Saturday night, junior St. Clair native C.J. Motte continued his stellar play between the pipes after recording a shutout Friday against the Huskies. Michigan Tech outshot Ferris State, 46-20, but Motte’s 44 saves held the fort down en route to a 3-2 FSU win, improving his record to 17-1-3 on the year. Alex Petan recorded a goal and an assist, Shane Hanna chipped in with a pair of helpers and Grand Ledge native David Johnstone also scored for MTU. Justin Buzzeo, TJ Schlueter and Kenny Babinski (Midland) scored for the Bulldogs, while freshman and former Muskegon Lumberjacks forward Chad MacDonald (Battle Creek) recorded a pair of assists. With the sweep, the No. 2 Bulldogs improved their record to 17-3-3 overall.

Wolverines drop pair in Wisconsin

The Wolverines (No. 13; 10-6-2) fell to a solid Wisconsin (No. 9; 13-6-1) squad on both Friday and Saturday by a combined score of 8-3 in Big Ten play. Friday, former U.S. NTDP forward Michael Mersch potted a hat trick and added an assist for the Badgers to give him 24 points in 20 games this season. Jefferson Dahl also had a four-point night for Wisconsin in its 5-2 win. Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor) and Luke Moffatt scored for the Wolverines. On Saturday, the Wolverines dropped a 3-1 decision to Wisconsin. Moffatt scored the only goal for Michigan, and Copp drew the assist for his 16th point of the season in as many games played.  Freshman Zach Nagelvoort (Holland) took the loss both nights, while Wisconsin’s Joel Rumpel improved to an impressive 10-1 on the season with a pair of wins.

Spartans lose Friday, win shootout Saturday in Columbus

Despite a three-point effort from Canton native Matt Berry, a hat trick and four-point night from Ohio State’s (11-6-1) Ryan Dzingel helped trump the Spartans (6-10-3) Friday night in Ohio by a 5-3 score. MSU outshot OSU in that contest, 36-30. The next night, Michigan State fought to a tie with the Buckeyes, 1-1, before getting the shootout win in six rounds (3-2). Berry scored the goal for MSU – a three-goal, four-point weekend – with the assists going to Mike Ferrantino (Plymouth) and Jake Chelios (Bloomfield Hills).

Lakers drop both to Bemidji State

In a WCHA game that saw a combined 77 shots thrown on both goals, the visiting Bemijdi State Beavers defeated Lake Superior State by a 5-2 final Friday night. Junior Stephen Perfetto tallied a goal and an assist, and freshman Alex Globke (Waterford) potted a pair of helpers in the loss. Despite outshooting the Beavers 35-24, the Lakers fell again Saturday night, 3-1. Perfetto scored again and Globke again drew an assist. For Globke, his three-point weekend boosted him to 21 points in 22 games on the year, pretty impressive numbers for a first-year player.
