Shaved Ice – April 30

It all starts tonight.

After their big win Saturday night against Dallas, the Red Wings secured their spot in the 2013 NHL Playoffs. Those playoffs begin tonight, with the Red Wings taking on a familiar foe in the Anaheim Ducks. Here’s a look at the schedule (the Hockeytown faithful are going to be a tired group tomorrow):

It was made official yesterday that Jim Nill is leaving the Red Wings to take over as GM for the Dallas Stars. Here’s a Free Press article with Ken Holland commenting on the departure, and how he will handle finding a replacement. Big shoes to fill – Nill was one of the best.

Plymouth Whalers coach Mike Vellucci was just named OHL Coach of the Year. Congrats to Vellucci, who keeps himself quite busy running the OHL franchise in Plymouth as president, GM and coach.

Livonia native and Wolverines alum David Moss was added to the Team USA roster for the IIHF World Championship.

Flint native Brian Rolston has decided to retire after 17 NHL seasons.

Remember this?

The Colorado Avalanche won the draft lottery last night, which means they have first dibs on claiming former NTDP standout Seth Jones.

The Wings are just one of 16 teams about to start the playoffs. Here are the match-ups…who do you think will advance to the second round?

Western Conference
Chicago vs. Minnesota
Anaheim vs. Detroit
Vancouver vs. San Jose
St. Louis vs. Los Angeles

Eastern Conference
Pittsburgh vs. New York (Islanders)
Montreal vs. Ottawa
Washington vs. New York (Rangers)
Boston vs. Toronto

And check out this awesome article from the Washington Post on Chesterfield native Steve Oleksy, who keeps on proving that you should never give up on your dreams. Oleksy and the Capitals start their playoff run against the Rangers on Thursday.

The last time the Red Wings didn’t make the playoffs, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” had just started on TV. Click here to see a bunch of other things that were going on in the world the last time the NHL didn’t have the Red Wings joining them for postseason play.

Oh yeah, and one more video to get you fired up for tonight.

We’ll be with you all night as we count down the hours to Game 1.
