Shaved Ice – March 11

What a weekend.

Where to start? How about the boys high school hockey state finals?

Click the images below to see our game recaps from the three Saturday state final games at Compuware Arena.

Stevenson won the D2 state title.

Cranbrook won the D3 state title.

And Brighton repeated as D1 state champs.

Meanwhile, in the college hockey landscape…

The Wolverines advanced to the second round of the CCHA playoffs.

And so did the Spartans.

Second-round CCHA match-ups are as follows:

  • Michigan State at Miami
  • Bowling Green at Notre Dame
  • Michigan at Western Michigan
  • Ferris State at Ohio State

And don’t even get us started on the youth hockey games. We were at the 16U Girls Tier 1 state final between Honeybaked and Little Caesars, and we’re still waiting for it to end. We’ll just put it this way – they ran out of room on the scoreboard for the extra periods needed to decide a winner.

Honeybaked won that one, and they won the 14U and 19U state titles, as well. We’ll have a whole bunch of youth hockey coverage coming up over the next few days.

Things didn’t go to well for the Red Wings, though. Here’s a recap from Saturday, and Darren Eliot’s take on Sunday’s game.

Highlights from yesterday’s Red Wings game.

Chesterfield native Steven Oleksy picked up his first NHL goal yesterday. That’s four points in four games for the former Lake Superior defenseman – talk about a Michi-gamer worthy start to his NHL career.

And congrats to Sterling Heights native – and Wolverines alum – Greg Pateryn for making his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens over the weekend.

The NHL board of governors will hold a fax vote this week over the proposed realignment. Sure do hope it passes.

Evgeni Malkin is out again, this time with an upper-body injury.

ESPN always shows basketball buzzer-beaters…here’s a hockey one for ya instead.

Purple Game at Van Andel. Awesome.

We’ll be posting articles and photo galleries all day today.
