Quick hits
Our draft coverage continues – here’s a read on how Jim Nill and the Red Wings changed their draft approach a bit.
Former Red Wing Adam Oates is one of four players (Pavel Bure, Mats Sundin, and Joe Sakic) that will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame this fall. Arguably the biggest news, however, was that Brendan Shanahan was not on the list of the new inductees.
The Wings also announced the roster for their Development Camp, which will be held in Traverse City once again.
The Whalers took Ludvig Bystrom in the CHL Import Draft – he’s a second-round pick of the Dallas Stars.
Ann Arbor native Jeff Petry is one of seven Oilers receiving qualifying offers from the club today.
And by now I’m sure you’ve heard the news, but here it is anyways – Michigan native Jeff Blashill is the new coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Highlight reel
Couldn’t embed the video, but you need to see this one – apparently a coach tripped two youth hockey players during the post-game handshake line, which resulted in a broken wrist for one of the kids. Today’s friendly reminder to not act like a total moron at youth hockey games is brought to you by CTV in Canada.
Outside the Mitten
Ralph Krueger has been promoted from assistant coach to head coach by the Edmonton Oilers.
Sam Babintsev, who is currently playing for the Oakland Grizzlies midget major squad, was taken 30th overall in the CHL Import Draft by Mississauga.
Prized free agent prospect Justin Schultz is in Toronto to meet with the Rangers, Flames, Canucks and Oilers. The Red Wings are in the hunt for the former Wisconsin stand-out as well.
