Shaved Ice – Nov. 4

What do the Red Wings need to do to get back to their winning ways?

Quick hits

Fans witnessed another frustrating performance from the Red Wings last night, as Detroit lost to Calgary 4-1. Dan Cleary had the lone goal for the Wings, who watched Jerome Iginla score on not one, but two one-timer blasts from the left face-off dot. Here’s my recap from the Joe last night.

The Wings will attempt to end their losing streak tomorrow night. Until then, get your fill of college hockey. In the CCHA, Michigan hosts Western Michigan, Ferris State travels to Bowling Green, Northern Michigan hosts Notre Dame, and Lake Superior takes on Bemidji State in non-conference play. Michigan Tech hosts Minnesota State in WCHA play.

I’ll be at Yost tonight, but keep you filled in on all the action.

Meanwhile, the Whalers and Spirit get back to the grind, as well. Plymouth hosts Barrie and Windsor tonight and tomorrow, then travels up to Saginaw for the latest in the in-state rivalry. The Spirit host Barrie Saturday night.

Highlight reel

Instead of showing sad Wings highlights, I figured we would go for something a little bit more…entertaining. Here is a shoot-out between two goalies. Yes, goalies trying to score on other goalies.

Special thanks to my friend Blake Benzel for finding that gem.

Outside the Mitten

Rookie Ben Scrivens made his NHL debut in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, and stopped 38 shots to help the Leafs beat Columbus 4-1. Toronto is in first place in the Eastern Conference. Yeah, I know.

The Red Wings will continue to see Pekka Rinne for the foreseeable future (except for that whole conference/division realignment thing). The Predators locked up their all-star goaltender for seven more years.

While the Wings have lost six straight, the Edmonton Oilers have won six straight. It’s a weird hockey world we live in today….
