Shaved Ice – Nov. 11

Have a great Veterans Day everyone. Remember why you’re lucky enough to be watching hockey all weekend.

Quick hits

The Red Wings take their two-game win streak into a clash with the Edmonton Oilers tonight at Joe Louis Arena. The Oilers, by the way, are actually a pretty good hockey team this year, and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin has been the league’s best goaltender to start the season.

There’s plenty of action in the college hockey world this weekend, as well.

The Spartans head to Kalamazoo to take on No. 5/6 Western Michigan. The Broncos are fresh off a series split with the Wolverines, while MSU had a bye week last weekend.

Speaking of Wolverines, the University of Michigan has a weekend series against the Miami RedHawks.

No. 8 Ferris State welcomes No. 11 Lake Superior State for a two-game series in Big Rapids that should certainly feature some top-notch hockey.

The Northern Michigan Wildcats are playing a weekend series in Columbus, starting with a Veterans Day matinee this afternoon.

Over on the junior hockey side, the Whalers have three games this weekend – at Guelph, then at home for Sault Ste. Marie and Erie. Meanwhile, the Spirit take a trip through Canada, playing games at Ottawa, Belleville, and Kingston.

Highlight reel

With it being Veterans Day, it seems that there is only one hockey highlight fitting for the blog this morning.

Outside the Mitten

The defending Stanley Cup champs roughed up the team the Wings will take on tonight. Boston posted a 6-3 win over the Oilers and back-up goaltender Devan Dubnyk.

It doesn’t have much impact on the Michigan teams yet, but the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers clash with the Wisconsin Badgers this weekend. In a few years, that will be a huge Big Ten battle that could affect where MSU and Michigan sit in their conference standings.
